Happy 6th Birthday Juliette!
Today, Juliette turns 6!
What an extraordinary journey it has been - filled with ups and downs; twists and turns. The only thing that has been consistent are the surprises and lessons learned.
Like many journeys, let's start at the beginning.
September 21, 2014
was the day I launched Juliette in 3 buildings in Murray Hill. It was a pilot. Our service offering was simple - we would pickup your laundry that night before 10PM, and return it a few hours later before 6AM.
We were an immediate hit! Clients signed up for our service on Day 1, and we slowly started to expand to other buildings in the neighborhood.
In 2015, we expanded our services to include dry cleaning.
Ok 2016 was definitely a challenging year. I was struggling to figure out how to scale the company while also trying to fundraise. I failed at both and ended up losing my entire team. It was a dark time; but it was through this experience that I learned resilience and faith - faith in myself. Because no matter what happened, no matter how much it hurt - I never let go. I never stopped.
February 2017 - shit hit the fan. The place where I had been doing all of the cleaning suddenly kicked me out. At this point - I had no team; no place to clean; and no money. It would appear that I had "hit bottom". But to be honest, it never even occurred to me.
It was as if no matter how deep I fell in the hole, I always held an upward glance towards the light. And as long as I kept my focus on the light above, I was blind to the darkness around me.
Thinking back on it, I remember this great quote by Winston Churchill that has always carried me through difficult times:
If you're going through hell, keep going.
So onward I went.
I can't tell you exactly what happened next. There isn't one thing I could point to and say "Ah! this is the one thing I did to bring about the next round of success".
It was more of a feeling... an attitude... a mindset.
Call me crazy, but my mind does not recognize failure. Instead, it only sees opportunity. So even if everything around me is bat-shit crazy my mind is only focusing on where the opportunity is.
Focus - is the key word here. Because obstacles are inevitable. Problems are plentiful. But my humble upbringing has trained me to make the most of every situation.
On April 2017, we opened our first location on the Upper West Side.
We brought our location to capacity.
We opened our 2nd location.
Well, the year isn't quite over yet, but I think it's safe to say it's definitely been a hell of a year. First and foremost, I'm thankful for the good health of myself and my loved ones. I'm thankful that my business has remained open the whole time, and never shutdown.
However, the economic impact of Covid 19 has been an awakening. It's given me fresh perspective on where the weaknesses in the company are. Which in turn has shown me where the opportunities for improvement are.
Building on the lessons I've learned from 2017 - everything is a matter of perspective. There are many things we cannot control. But one of the things we can control is how we respond to situations.
So I look forward to rising to the challenges of the future. There's no doubt in my mind that we will all emerge sharper, better, and even more focused.
Cheers to continuing on this adventure with me! With that, I'll end with another favorite quote and a sweet deal.
Courage is not having the strength to go on; it is going on when you don't have the strength. - Theodore Roosevelt
